To work in TUSCANY                                                      italian language

• Tuscany has a population of more than three and a half million inhabitants and an unemployment rate of 4.8% (2006), well below the Italian national average of 6.8% or the European average of 7.9%, as regards the EU at 27 and the average of 7.8% as regards the Euro Zone. In Tuscany the total employment rate for population between 15-64 years of age is 64.8% and the female employment rate is 55%.

• Tuscany has a highly competitive productive context, orientated towards export and founded mostly on small companies. During the last few years these have reduced the employers and have adapted themselves to international economic changes.

•  The services sector has a predominant role in the economy (66.8% of total employment) compared to industry (29.3%) and agriculture (3.9%) and seems to be continuously evolving because of both the growth of services in traditional sectors (with an important role in tourism and trade), and because of the development of professions in new production services and in Innovation and Communication Technologies. The model of regional development, based on small businesses, has guaranteed over the past few years high employment possibilities for both male and female sectors of the population, with a rate of employment (68.1%) above the national average (62.7%).

• Even though there are more job opportunities than in other areas of Italy, it must be remembered that the employment market in Tuscany is very mobile and is subject to constant transformation.

• Among the dynamics present is a situation common to all the more advanced economic areas of the country: on one hand, businesses cannot find people with the kind of qualifications necessary, and on the other, young people cannot find work as they have not got the qualifications required. The lack of unskilled labourers, or of young people willing to train for specialised work is an increasing difficulty for Tuscan employers.
